Tips For Moving Furniture

Moving furniture does require that you take some extra care. That is due to the fact that a majority of furniture pieces cannot be packed inside of a box because they are too large.

Before you move, take an inventory of all of the furniture you have, and also make note of the amount of time it will take for you to disassemble and prepare each piece ahead of time.

Choose the tools that you are going to need for disassembling any frames, doors, table tops or legs. Have some plastic bags on hand that are sandwich size or larger, and also a permanent marker.

The first thing you will want to do is prepare any furniture pieces that need to be disassembled. They will be the most time-consuming, so you will want to do this while you still have energy.

Remove any removable parts. In particular, bed frames, shelves, glass tops and table legs. Work on one piece before going on to the next. Save the washers, bolts and nuts in a plastic bag. Use your marker to label the outside of the bag with what piece of furniture that it belongs to in addition to the tools that are needed to reassemble the furniture.

Tape the plastic bags under the pieces of furniture. Be sure to not attach them to areas where they could get damaged when you remove the tape.

If certain furniture has numerous parts, number them “1 of 4,” “2 of 4,” etc. Attach a small sticker to the bottom.

If at all possible, secure the assembly instruction booklet that came with the piece of furniture to its underside. Or if the manual is too big, then pack it in a separate box labeled “furniture instruction manuals.”

To protect fine wood furnishings from scratches, apply wax to it. Remember, you need to be careful when removing delicate items, you don’t want your fantastic white painted bedroom furniture scraping against the stair banister and getting damaged.

Remove pillows and cushions and put them into plastic, clear garbage bags. Make sure the bags are fastened well and that there are no holes in the bags. The bags can also be used for protecting pieces that are fragile and fill in crevices or holes in the moving truck.

Wrap the pieces of furniture with bubble wrap or blankets and secure with rope or tape. Do not put tape on finished or painted surfaces directly.

Do not clean furniture or upholstery before moving. You will want to thoroughly clean everything after you have moved into your new house. Save yourself some money on cleaning costs.
